Not Your Regular Yoga Ball Workout

A two-part online series exploring movement, handstands and backbending

Discover the yoga ball as a partner for movement exploration and technical training. Through guided improvisation and progressive exercises, explore how its responsive surface and spherical shape can support weight transfer, balance and strength through your range of motion.

Join either two-hour workshop independently, or take both for the complete series. Each day begins with an exploratory movement warm-up before moving into its technical focus.

Part One: Movement Exploration & Handstands

Sunday, October 4, 2026 · 12–2 p.m. EDT

Exploratory warm-up

Roll, spiral, and melt over the ball, using its suppleness and resistance to explore supported movement. Discover contact through the underarms, backs of the knees, shoulders and neck area, and explore how weight travels through the ball into the ground. Guided improvisation introduces changing points of support, weight shifts and dynamic responses to gravity, preparing the body for handstand practice.

Handstand technique & play

Explore yoga-ball drills ranging from beginner foundations to advanced challenges, with progressions selected for your current ability. Work with weight transfer, balance, coordination and controlled loading, then connect these discoveries to your handbalancing practice. Playful movement tasks offer new ways to approach familiar technical challenges and explore new places.

Prerequisites: holding a handstand at the wall for 1½ minutes, a kick-up to handstand, and the ability to twist safely out of a handstand in the centre. Being able to press to handstand from feet on the floor is a plus.

Part Two: Movement Exploration & Backbending

Sunday, October 11, 2026 · 12–2 p.m. EDT

Exploratory warm-up

Begin with rolling, twisting and supported melting movements. Explore the ball moving against the body and the body travelling over the ball, developing awareness of spinal movement, changing support and your relationship to gravity.

Backbending technique & conditioning

Explore supported backbends, progressive drills and resistance-based exercises that introduce principles of contortion training. Develop active flexibility, strength and control near the end of your available range, using the ball for both support and challenge. The focus is on building the physical capacity for deeper bends and continued progress over time.
